Prison Guard Nearly Smoked

Rob | News | Thursday, March 1st, 2007

This changes everything. I used to believe that anti-smoking programs were important. I am a non-smoker who was raised by smokers. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke and love the fact that you can no longer smoke in bars in my city. So when I would see a commercial or a billboard urging people to quit, I thought it was a good thing. I was wrong. It’s a God damn waste of time. This conclusion came to me as I read the harrowing tale of a prison guard taken hostage by two crazed prisoners. were these prisoners demanding release, better treatment, or access to petroleum-jelly supplies? No!!! They were demanding cigarettes. Apparently the Northeast Correctional Complex in Johnson City, Tennessee, where the two men are incarcerated, is a smoke-free prison. Upon receiving their nicotine fix the two inmates released their hostage and returned to their cells peacefully. And so back the point at hand — let’s do everything we can to keep kids away from tobacco, but for all the public money spent on smoking cessation programs — lets face it — it is money wasted. Just ask the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
